Physical Education (PE)
"Champions keep playing until they get it right." – Billie Jean King
At Milton Abbot School, we believe that Physical Education is essential to children's physical, social and emotional development. Through a broad and engaging curriculum, we aim to develop physically literate children who have the confidence, knowledge and motivation to enjoy being active throughout their lives.
Our PE curriculum provides opportunities for every child to succeed through a wide range of activities including games, gymnastics, dance, athletics and outdoor learning. Children develop fundamental movement skills, teamwork, leadership and resilience while learning the importance of maintaining a healthy and active lifestyle. We encourage all pupils to challenge themselves, work collaboratively and experience the enjoyment that comes from participation, achievement and personal improvement.
Our curriculum helps children to:
- Develop agility, balance, coordination and confidence.
- Build teamwork, communication and leadership skills.
- Understand the importance of physical and mental wellbeing.
- Participate competitively and cooperatively in a range of sports and activities.
- Improve performance through practice and perseverance.
- Develop a lifelong enjoyment of sport and physical activity.
Our school values are at the heart of PE:
Mindfulness
PE helps children develop an awareness of their bodies, emotions and wellbeing. Pupils learn to understand the importance of physical activity for both their physical and mental health. Through reflection, self-evaluation and teamwork, children develop respect for themselves, their peers and the wider sporting community.
Ambition
Children are encouraged to challenge themselves, set goals and strive to improve their performance. Whether learning a new skill, competing in a team or aiming for a personal best, pupils are inspired to be ambitious and take pride in their achievements. We encourage children to embrace opportunities and believe in their own potential.
Perseverance
PE teaches children that improvement comes through effort, practice and determination. Pupils learn to overcome setbacks, respond positively to challenges and recognise that success often comes from trying again. Through sport and physical activity, children develop resilience and confidence that supports them both inside and outside the classroom.
Success
Every child has the opportunity to experience success in PE. We celebrate progress, teamwork, effort and achievement, recognising that success means different things for different learners. By building confidence and developing new skills, children learn to take pride in their accomplishments and enjoy being active.
Through lessons, clubs, competitions and sporting events, we aim to foster a positive attitude towards physical activity and healthy lifestyles. Children are encouraged to support one another, show good sportsmanship and enjoy representing their school with pride.
By the time they leave Milton Abbot School, our children will be confident, resilient and enthusiastic participants in physical activity. They will understand the value of an active lifestyle and possess the skills, determination and positive mindset needed to pursue success in sport and life through Mindfulness, Ambition, Perseverance and Success.
